Autism or ADHD? What's the Difference?

Autism and ADHD are both neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how people think, process information, and interact with the world, but they are not the same.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people process the world around them. It often involves differences in social communication, sensory processing, and how someone thinks or interacts with others. Autism isn’t something to be “fixed”—it’s a different way of being that deserves understanding and support.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) impacts attention, organization, emotional regulation, and impulse control. People with ADHD often struggle with focus, forgetfulness, and restlessness—but they also bring unique creativity and drive when supported properly.

While the two can look similar—especially in children—there are key distinctions. People with ADHD may struggle to focus because they’re easily distracted, while those with autism may hyperfocus on specific interests. Someone with autism might find social situations confusing or overwhelming, while someone with ADHD may interrupt or speak impulsively without recognizing the impact.

It’s also common to have both. That’s why an accurate evaluation matters: understanding which traits belong to which condition (or both) helps guide the right support, strategies, and treatment.

The Importance of Early Intervention

Getting an accurate diagnosis early can make a powerful difference. When autism or ADHD is identified sooner, individuals can access the support, tools, and accommodations they need to thrive—at home, in school, at work, and in relationships.

Early intervention helps reduce frustration, builds self-awareness, and supports the development of emotional regulation, communication skills, and executive functioning. It can also prevent misdiagnosis or years of feeling misunderstood.

Whether you’re a parent seeking answers for your child or an adult exploring long-standing challenges, early evaluation isn’t just about labeling—it’s about understanding and empowering the path forward.

It's Never Too Late to Understand Your Mind

Many adults reach a point in life where things just don’t add up—challenges with focus, social interactions, emotional regulation, or burnout may feel persistent and unexplained. You might have spent years feeling “off,” misunderstood, or masking to fit in.

Receiving a diagnosis of autism or ADHD as an adult can be a transformative experience. It’s not about labeling—it’s about finding clarity, self-compassion, and a roadmap for support.

An adult diagnosis can help you understand your strengths and challenges, make sense of past experiences, and identify accommodations that truly work for you. Whether you’re seeking personal validation, workplace accommodations, or tools to better navigate your relationships, understanding your neurotype can be the first step toward meaningful change.

Types of ADHD & Autism Assessments We Offer

We are dedicated to providing specialized and compassionate care in psychological evaluations.

Our Abbreviated Autism Assessment is best for individuals who already have a strong understanding of their traits and are seeking formal confirmation without extensive testing. This streamlined evaluation provides a faster, lower-cost path to diagnostic clarity in a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment.

This assessment includes:

  • A brief consultation to discuss your goals
  • One or more virtual sessions with a licensed clinician
  • A clinical interview
  • Optional review of relevant background information or self-report tools
  • A brief written summary or diagnostic confirmation letter

The entire process is conducted online, allowing you to complete the evaluation from the comfort of your home, ensuring a stress-free and familiar environment.

We encourage you to share any online self-tests (such as the RAADS-R) or personal notes about traits you identify with. The assessment itself is designed to fit your schedule, with appointments once or twice a week based on your availability.

Our Standard Autism Assessment is best for individuals looking for a thorough diagnostic evaluation without full cognitive or neuropsychological testing. This balanced assessment offers meaningful insight while remaining accessible and efficient.

This assessment includes:

  • A consultation to determine the best evaluation level
  • Multiple virtual sessions with a licensed clinician
  • A detailed clinical interview exploring developmental, sensory, and social-emotional history
  • Autism-specific testing tools and rating scales
  • Optional input from caregivers, partners, or other relevant sources
  • A written diagnostic report with clear findings and individualized recommendations

All sessions are conducted via secure telehealth, allowing you to participate from home in a comfortable, low-stress environment.

Our Comprehensive Autism Assessment is best for individuals with complex presentations, multiple diagnoses, or a need for formal documentation for accommodations or services. This in-depth evaluation is our most in-depth option, integrating psychological and neuropsychological testing to provide a complete diagnostic picture.

Autism often co-occurs with conditions like anxiety, depression, or ADHD, and our expert clinicians are skilled in providing support that focuses on your overall well-being.

Each evaluation includes:

  • A full review of developmental, behavioral, cognitive, and adaptive functioning
  • Use of gold-standard screening and diagnostic tools, which may include: ABC, CARS-2, M-CHAT, ASQ, AQ, CAST, ADI-R, and DISCO
  • Identification of ASD severity level (if criteria are met)
  • Screening for other possible diagnoses to ensure diagnostic clarity

Our evaluations are designed not only to determine whether a person meets criteria for ASD but also to ensure that symptoms are not better explained by another condition. We take a comprehensive and individualized approach to every assessment.
